Three great quotes from the Founders, very nice. So yes, America is not a pure democracy, it is a democratic republican with representatives to do the work of the people. Do tell me, is extreme inequality in America the will of the people? Are the public policy choices and outcomes that give rise to extreme inequality the will of the people? I doubt it. So oligarchy it is.

All three quotes have a common theme: the people are ignorant, ill-informed, or misled. I find it ironic then, that the biggest media companies are public companies that sold shares of stock as corporations. The vast majority of directly held stocks are owned by the top 10%. Those shareholders tell the media companies what they can and cannot say. That they would sow division and confusion by their proxies would not be surprising.

The confusion we see now in this country, and Donald Trump has profited handsomely from it as a media mogul, is a feature, not a bug. Evil doesn't come out of a vacuum. Evil is evidence of confusion. Those we anoint as “good” are simply less confused.

In the age of the Internet, “The body of the people…do not possess the discernment and stability necessary for systematic government”, a condescending statement at best, does not apply. Remember all those shareholders? Did they provide us with enough information to figure out what to do during the pandemic? They sure tried, yet there were still fountains of misinformation, like Trump and Fox News. They are doing the will of their shareholders, not the rest of us.

If you think oligarchy is a better way, thanks for sharing.
