I remember how it was in the beginning. I remember the cheerleaders telling me how great it will be when Ukraine defeats Russia’s great big authoritarian monster, Vladimir Putin. I remember people telling me that as soon as Russia loses a few tanks, they’ll turn tail and go back. Well, that didn’t happen.

More than 2 years later and 500,000 dead and the war is still going on, dear. Russia still occupies at least 20% of the territory of Ukraine. Ukraine has a manpower problem, an ammo shortage and now, a critical power problem. Ukraine can’t help itself.

It’s really hard to make shells without electricity. It’s very difficult to communicate with electronics without electricity. Say goodbye to the microwave and hello to the dumpster fire. Sorry, Call of Duty is out of service today.

For the last two days, Naked Capitalism has running shorter stories from the incredibly verbose John Helmer, one of the longest serving independent news correspondents in Russia.
