Last Month Ukraine Passed a Law Prohibiting Peace Negotiations With Russia

I thought we were sending them weapons so that they’d be in the best possible position to negotiate for peace. I guess I was wrong.

You know, this war in Ukraine isn’t going to end anytime soon. The best estimates I’ve seen say that it will end a few years from now, and that’s after 8 months of fighting already. I really don’t think the world can afford a long war in Ukraine. The war is upsetting economies everywhere. People are starving due to the war. And yet…

There are people on this planet who think that winning is more important than making sure people are fed. They think that Ukraine is fighting for freedom, but judging by everyone who has sent aid to Ukraine to win, I’m not sure that’s what they’re fighting for.

So it was with some surprise that I saw this paragraph in a story from Al Jazeera, English Edition. The story titled, “‘Much softer’: Is Russia eyeing a way out of the Ukraine war?” and published on 10/21/22, suggests that Russia is beginning to tire of the war and would like a way out. Good luck with that.

I was searching for progress on negotiations for peace talks. I didn’t find much. That’s because Ukraine won’t negotiate with Russia. Ukraine is so confident it will win that it passed a law prohibiting negotiation with Russia. At least, that’s what Al Jazeera said:

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday that Putin has been open for negotiations “from the very beginning” and “nothing has changed”.

“If you remember, President Putin tried to initiate talks with both NATO and the United States even before the special military operation,” he said.

“Putin was open to negotiations when a document was almost agreed on between Russian and Ukrainian [negotiators]. So in that respect, nothing has changed. The position of the Ukrainian side has changed… Ukrainian law now prohibits any negotiations,” Peskov added. [emphasis mine]

I remember what some people have said. Putin doesn’t need an offramp, he needs to lose. Is that what we want? Would that give anyone satisfaction to see him twisting in the wind after a…
