I Think I Finally Figured Out What Capitalism is For, and it Ain’t Freedom

It could be used for freedom, but that's not how capitalism is being used today.

There’s a myth going around that says human beings like to own things. You know, like cars, TVs, video games, luxury homes, and um, other humans.

That myth is widely perpetuated throughout the world, you know, as if owning things is an incentive to work. Somebody is making things to sell because they know that other people want those things. We don’t want to rent when we can own. Some people call that the “free market”.

So basically, people are willing to give up freedom for things.

I’m a fan of Frank Zappa. He made great music. He was a philosopher, too. I’ve seen him wax eloquent on video. I believe he was sincere in his beliefs. I believe he was a peaceful man, right up there with Carl Sagan and Fred Rogers. Let me repeat what he said to make it easier to read:

“Communism doesn’t work because people like to own stuff.”
