How Trump’s Threats of Violence Invoke an Ancient Tradition of the Rentier Class

It’s not a very subtle form of blackmail.

They tell us that if Trump is indicted, there will be violence. Then they tell us that if Trump loses in 2024, there will be violence. This is what we can expect from the king of the rentier class, Donald J. Trump.

The irony is hard to miss. The same faction that we know of as the “MAGA Republicans” once decried Antifa as a violent, out-of-control mob. Now the MAGA Mob threatens the rest of us with violence if they don't get their way.

“Heads I win, tails you lose.”

I raise the topic of the rentier class because we’re in the middle of an open class war. The wealthy are in large part, the rentier class. They are Wall Street. They are copyright and patent monopolies. They are insurance and real estate. They are mining, oil, and gas. They all have one thing in common: they collect monopoly rents.

Trump is a landlord. Trump is a media empire. Trump is loaded with intellectual property. It is a small wonder why his millions of supporters, who are mostly, not a member of the rentier class, still support him. They are the MAGA Republicans.
