Eating the Hand that Feeds You
Winning at any cost is probably not the best way to ensure our survival.
From time to time I flash on this image of Jeff Bezos, laughing and having a good time. The image in my mind comes from a video produced in part by Dean Baker, who has a Ph.D in economics. The video? “How to Unf*ck America”.
I think Baker knows more about how the economy works that Bezos does. Why?
As a billionaire, Bezos will never be homeless. He’ll never run out of money. He’s completely insulated from the consequences of his decisions.
He may fail at many things, but he won’t lose his job. He won’t be poor. He will never be out on the street.
Bezos has many friends who have made fortunes because of his work and connections. His friends won’t let him fail. In the realm of the billionaires, there is a very special form of socialism. They fail up, not down.
I am flashing now on a phrase from a book by Michael Dell, majority shareholder and founder of the largest IT company in the world, Dell Technologies. I’m not here to criticize the company or his business practices.
