Breaking the Fantasy Football Game of American Politics
Reality is not a matter of choice for the rest of us.
There’s this side of the news that I see when I look at the mainstream media. It’s a sort of candy-perfume-girl side of the news. They only show you the walled garden. Their advertising customers are employers and those employers don’t want to startle you. Here’s a sample from Politico:
Notice how softball the headlines are. Now notice the size of the employer in the ad that surrounds the headlines. General Electric is a huge employer and has been around for as long as I can remember. To me, they are old money. They used to be famous for making things. Well, they still do, but now they make most of their money financing things.
Notice the focus on the spending fight in Congress that we have every single year, multiple times a year. We’re supposed to be more worried about the government shutting down than how employers control the government and the media. You’re not supposed to notice the collusion between government and employers. Here’s another sample from The Hill:
